The Hunger for Light
The Hunger for Light explores growth within a world already full.
The composition unfolds through densely layered radial forms that overlap, press against one another, and compete for space. Deep greens and near-black shapes create an enclosed environment, while red and yellow emerge as signals of urgency, heat, and exposure.
Light appears in narrow passages and concentrates at the centre, suggesting something scarce rather than freely available. The surrounding forms seem to bend toward it, reinforcing the idea of growth as a search shaped by limitation.
Along the outer edge, dark lines extend beyond the circular boundary. They do not function as decoration or closure. They suggest continued growth, as though the structure can no longer contain the life within it.
The symmetry offers order, but the colours remain in tension. They advance, recede, and claim territory. From a distance, the composition may appear balanced, yet closer observation reveals a crowded system sustained by competition.
Rather than presenting nature as passive harmony, the work reflects on the pressure beneath living systems, where every form persists because it must find room to survive.

Artist Statement
I often think about forests as places that seem calm from a distance, even though everything within them is reaching, adapting, and competing. Light is limited. Space is already occupied. I approached colour in the same way. I wanted each tone to press against the next, disappear, return, and continue searching for room. The lines extending beyond the edge became signs of growth that persists even after the form appears complete. The Hunger for Light reflects the urgency beneath natural balance, the need shared by every living thing to move toward what sustains it.
